Abstract
Both external and internal hydrogen tests were run on the same heat of AISI 4340 steel in order to study the hydrogen embrittlement phenomena. The experimental findings seem to point toward a continuum mechanics model in terms of the pressure tensor and pressure tensor gradient. Neither surface energy nor near surface cohesive bond energy arguments are supported by the present findings.
