Abstract

The region of Yaritagua-Las Piedras and Campo Elías-Guama in Yaracuy state, Venezuela is composed by one system of alluvial fans of different ages. The purpose of this work is to describe and to analyze the geomorphological processes responsible for its formation. The methodology was based on the analysis of documents, the field description and the photo interpretation of the area. The results indicate that these alluvial fans were built up by stream flows related to facies Gm, Gt, and Sh, and with debris flows associated with Gms facies. It is common to observe alternances of these facies with the ones of the type carbonatic P, which are indicators of climates more arid than the current one in the region. The alluvial fan spatial distribution, its geometry and the reactivation of the geomorphological processes suggested a neotectonic control during the Holocene.
