Abstract
In chromatographic experiments with various lignins in organic solvents it was found that molecular association occurred and a bimodal elution profile resulted. These effects were eliminated when LiCl was added to the dimethylformamide used as a solvent for lignin chromatography on Octylsepharose CL-4B and Sephadex LH-60 gels. Polystyrenes were used for column calibration markers. Molecular weights obtained from these experiments were correlated with results from chromatography of lignin on Sephadex G-75 with 0.1N NaOH eluant and from those obtained using an analytical ultracentrifuge.
