The use of forward error correction (FEC) provides significant coding gain. In particular, FEC-coded transmission can tolerate a lower optical signal to noise ratio (SNR) on the line, which in turns reduces impairments induced by nonlinearity, with the net effect being an increase in the Q2-factor when signal power is reduced.
