Abstract
An experimental research was conducted to analyze the effect of injection timings and engine load on the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of dimethyl ether (DME) and ULSD fuels. To investigate the combustion and emissions characteristics, an AVL 5402 research engine, a single-cylinder DI diesel engine, and an exhaust emission analyzer were used. The spray and combustion behavior in the combustion chamber were observed using visualization system composed of an endoscope and a high-speed CCD camera. The experiment results revealed that the injection quantity of DME fuel was larger than that of ULSD due to lower heat value of DME fuel under the same engine load. The ignition delay and combustion pressure for DME fuel were slightly shorter and higher than those of ULSD, respectively. In addition, premixed combustion phase which has low flame intensity was dominant when the DME combustion took place in cylinder. The emissions characteristics indicated that NOx formation was decreased as injection timing retarded in both fuels and the soot concentration of was nearly zero for DME fuel because of its properties.
