Abstract

Fixed bed gasification performance of low rank coals has been investigated as part of a continuing program undertaken by the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (USBM), the United States Department of Energy (DOE), and industrial cooperators of the Mining and Industrial Fuel Gas Group (MIFGa). A total of twelve low rank fuels have been gasified in an industrial, atmospheric pressure, air blown, Wellman-Galusha, fixed bed gasifier located at the USBM Twin Cities Research Center. These include 7 subbituminous coals, 3 lignites, and two physical forms of peat. General results of the gasification program with an emphasis on gasification of the low rank coals along with more detailed results of the gasification of 7 of the low rank fuels are presented here.
