Abstract

Fibrinous exudates play an important role in the host's defense of bacterial soiling of the peritoneal cavity. In the experimental rat peritonitis model, fibrin prevents early death, but predisposes to abscess formation. The mechanisms by which the infection fails to resolve is unknown. This study examines whether these fibrin deposits impair the host's ability to kill trapped bacteria, thereby enhancing abscess formation.
