Abstract

This chapter discusses family-based prevention and intervention for childhood chronic health conditions. The evidence for behavioral health and family therapy theories applied to childhood chronic illness models of integrated health care is provided. Current research and treatment considerations for three of the most prevalent childhood physical and chronic illnesses-obesity, diabetes, and asthma-are highlighted. The role of the systemic family therapist within these models of care is examined. Finally, evidence for the inclusion of family members and the entire family system is provided.
