Abstract
North American eye banking activities in 1987 set a new record for the number of corneas supplied for transplant: 35,930. This number is 14.6% higher than in 1986. This success was achieved through the efforts of 107 eye banks in the United States and Canada. The following brief summary of eye banking activities in North America includes a discussion of the affiliations between eye banks, methods of certification, sources of funding, and three of the laws governing some of these activities. Also discussed is a program that unites the activities of eye banks in North and South America.
