Abstract
The challenges in secure and reliable operation of complex energy supply and delivery networks are discussed. More efficient and intelligent processes are expected to be introduced in the electric networks with an increase in electricity's share in the total energy in the world. The enabling technologies developed by the electric power industry to meet reliability and efficiency requirements are also examined. The technological developments are related to several fields such as materials science, monitoring, analysis tools, control, information systems and online data processing and intelligent electronic devices.
