Abstract

Lantana camara is a wild plant toxic to livestock. Natural incidence of lantana poisoning has been observed in ruminants only. We have evaluated serum proteins in guinea pigs as a laboratory animal model for Lantana poisoning. There was no change in total protein content and only a marginal decrease in serum albumin content which was ascribed to the short period of intoxication. There was no change in the level of α-globulins. β-Globulins exhibited a significant decrease in the sera of Lantana poisoned guinea pigs. However, there was marked increase in the level of γ-globulins in sera of Lantana poisoned guinea pigs. The observations on albumin, total globulin level and albumin:globulin ratio in Lantana poisoned guinea pigs are consonant with those on sera of Lantana poisoned ruminants.
