Abstract
Muskingum's routing parameters K and x are derived by reducing the St. Venant equations to a linear, spacially lumped system. A finite element solution to the St. Venant equations is used to evaluate the accuracy of this approach. Predicted results from the hydrodynamic Muskingum method are compared to simulated results from the St. Venant equation for varying lengths, slopes, roughness coefficients, and channel geometries. In addition, the predicted outflow hydrographs for the St. Venant and hydrodynamic Muskingum models are compared to observed values in a natural channel.
