Abstract
Lifetimes and quantum efficiencies were predicted for erbium-doped zirconia glass. Amorphous zirconia waveguides were fabricated by ion-beam co-sputtering layers of zirconia and silica. Erbium was co-sputtered in the active guide layer to a concentration of 1.9×1020 cm-3. White light transmission measurements were performed in doped and undoped waveguides and were compared to produce the absorption spectrum. Results indicated that efficient optical amplifiers and lasers were feasible in zirconia by pumping at 1480 nm.
