Abstract

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that infects >90% of adults worldwide. EBV is responsible for most cases of infectious mononucleosis, and is associated with the development of certain cancers and autoimmune diseases, especially multiple sclerosis. EBV vaccines could potentially eliminate or reduce the severity of all of these diseases. This chapter reviews the research on prophylactic and therapeutic EBV vaccines including a discussion of the barriers impacting their development.
