Abstract
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) has occupied a unique place in the US healthcare system since 1972, when Social Security extended Medicare coverage to patients under age 65 with ESRD or chronic kidney failure who require dialysis or a kidney transplant (PL 92-603). Since that time, more than a million such patients have entered the Medicare entitlement program.
