Electrical neutrality of atoms and grand unification models

Grand unification models are considered, in which atoms possess tiny but nonvanishing electrical charges. It is shown that such models contain a very large number of particles (although not necessarily as large as one would naively guess) and therefore it seems improbable that they could be realized in nature.
