Abstract

The effects of the randomness of dispersion-zero wavelength and relative channel location in high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) systems were analyzed. In dispersion-managed systems: the higher dispersion values improved system performance as a result of reduced self- and cross-phase modulation; and randomness of dispersion had an effect when lower dispersion values were used. In nondispersion-managed WDM systems, all the channels had to be placed on one side of dispersion-zero wavelength with an offset ≥0 nm.
