Abstract

When the coil current of a magnetic write head is turned off, magnetization in the head will try to relax to an equilibrium state that is energetically favored. For a 1:1 aspect ratio single pole type writer with cross track flares and a large throat height, the remnant field is large owing to the shape anisotropy of the pole tip. Reducing the flare height will reduce the remnant field. A pole tip design with both cross track and down track flares is proposed. The cross track throat height is large but the down track throat height is small. This design reduces the remnant field dramatically and produces both a high write field and a square shaped footprint.
