Abstract

An analysis is made of the effect of thin film absorption on characteristics of a reflection polarizer consisting of a thin film on an absorbing metal substrate. The conditions that bring about zero reflectance for either parallel-polarized or perpendicular-polarized light are derived for such systems. Numerical reflectance results are given for polarizers having a silver substrate and films having various degrees of absorption. The polarizers can have high reflectance for the unextinguished component and low sensitivity for the extinguished component.
