Abstract

Measurements of the critical heat flux (CHF) in saturated, pool boiling on small, square, horizontal, heating elements were made. The effect of a dimensionless length scale, L′= L[g(ρl - ρv)/σ] 1/2 , on CHF was determined by varying the characteristic dimension of the heater. The fluid used was FC-72 which is a commercially available perfluorinated liquid. An experimental technique in which glass chips, coated with a thin film of tin-oxide, were used as electrical resistance heaters is described.
