Abstract
The effect of the 11-oxygen function on the stereochemieal course of homogeneous catalytic reduction of steroidal 1,4-dien-3-ones has been examined. Reduction of the 1,2-double bond in l,4-dien-3-ones using tristriphenylphosphinerhodium chloride as catalyst proceeds predominantly from the α-face except for the 11α-hydroxy substituted compound in which reduction is not stereospecific.
