Abstract

This chapter aims to place dryland East Asia (DEA) into hemispheric context by contrasting recent patterns of variability and change observed within DEA with comparable dryland regions in Central Asia and North America. Key knowledge gaps in DEA include the impacts of climate variability and change on both biogeophysical and socio-physical processes (Qi et al., 2012). Water is the common limiting factor in all drylands. Thus, we focus on spatiotemporal patterns of three environmental variables related to water-the state of the vegetated land surface, land cover, and precipitation-to contextualize the recent land dynamics in the arid expanses of East Asia.
