Abstract

Nicotine in water was oxidized by exposure to UV light and low dose of H2O2. Nicotine in water decayed within minutes by direct photolysis at near neutral pH. At near neutral pH where the monoprotonated species predominates, the reaction rate approx. doubled with the addn. of 5 mM H2O2. The reaction rates were affected by changes on the initial H2O2 concn. and pH of the reaction.
