Digital simulation of field-oriented control of induction motor drives using EMTP

Abstract

It is useful to simulate the field-oriented control prior to its hardware implementation in an induction motor drive system. A general purpose program which also includes an induction motor model can greatly simplify this task. The Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) with its many other powerful capabilities is very suitable for this purpose. The Universal Machine (UM) model within EMTP provides a d-c axis model of an induction motor where the power coils (corresponding to the Stator) rotate and the excitation coils (corresponding to the rotor) remain stationary. The transformations required to simulate the field-oriented control by the EMTP are presented in this paper. The results include torque and speed control, effect of incorrect rotor time constant and the simulation of current-regulated inverter using a tolerance band control.
