Abstract

Unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms such as flatulence, abdominal pain, and diarrhea can often be traced to low levels of intestinal disaccharidase activity. However, hypolactasia is the only disaccharidase depletion that affects significant numbers of people worldwide. Fortunately, many dietary approaches exist for the management of disaccharidase depletions (Table 76.5).
