Abstract

Ilan Wurman discusses what Jeane Kirkpatrick's seminal article titled 'Dictatorships and Double Standards' has to teach the US about the condition of its President Barack Obama's foreign policy. Certain policies pursued by the former US President Jimmy Carter administration, Kirkpatrick argued were undermining the US interests and leading to its international isolation and authority. Obama has insisted on pursuing a misconceived notion of the national interest by refusing to support Iranian democrats. He instead believes that Alimadinejad might be willing to talk about his nuclear program. President Carter did the same when he refrained from criticizing the Soviet Union on human rights because he wanted to achieve arms reductions. While Obama is striving for consistency in nonproliferation for everyone, he is promoting a double standard by demanding nuclear reduction or disarmament from friends and allies and not confronting nuclear armament by its adversaries.
