Developments in the homogenization of elastic properties for complex three-dimensional composite structures

Abstract

The asymptotic expansion homogenization approach is employed to estimate the elastic stiffness tensor of three dimensional composites with inherently complex microstructures. A brief overview of the asymptotic expansion homogenization method is first presented. Secondly, the concept of a repetitive unit cell is introduced, leading to the finite element analysis of structurally complex, three dimensional composite models. Because of the limited attention paid to complex three-dimensional heterogeneous microstructures, the objective of this research is to estimate the homogenized elastic properties for three dimensional non-woven orthogonal fiber composites, woven fiber composites, and three dimensional interlocked fiber composites. In addition, the effects of varying the elastic properties of the constitutive materials for each type of composite is also studied.
