Abstract
Charge nurses play a critical role in hospital nursing departments. Yet they have traditionally had little formal preparation for the transition from clinical nurse to first line manager. This article describes how a program to teach leadership-management theory and skills to permanent charge nurses was planned, implemented, and evaluated. Suggestions based on the authors’ experiences, in addition to content and methods of the educational program, are presented.
