Abstract

The kinetics and rheology of nylon-6 homopolymer systems that use sodium caprolactam as a catalyst were studied. Two different initiators produced by reaction of isocyanates with epsilon -caprolactam monomers were used. Some limited kinetic work on a nylon-6 copolymer is also presented. The effect of crystallization on the reaction kinetics and demold times is discussed. The ultimate goal of this study is to provide processing guidelines and basic parameters to simulate reaction injection molding of nylon-6.
