Dermatology and Pruritus Ani

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Pruritus ani is a dermatologic condition characterized by burning or itching at the perianal area, which is categorized as either primary (idiopathic) or secondary. Multiple etiologies have been recognized, but the majority of patients do not have a single distinct contributing pathology. Diagnosis requires a comprehensive and stepwise algorithm including a detailed history and physical exam, as well as biochemical and microbiology testing. Management can be complicated without a clear etiology or understanding of perianal dermatologic pathologies and should be evidenced based.
