Abstract

The objective of the study was to investigate roll press compaction of coarsely-ground corn stover and corn cobs to produce compacted products with a bulk density of at least 240 kg/m3 (15 lb/ft3) for effective truck transport. A 44.8 kW (60 HP) demonstration-scale roll press compaction machine [520.7 mm (20.5 in.) roll diameter and 330.2 mm (13.0 in.) roll width] was used to compress corn stover [tub-ground with 76.2 mm (3.0 in.) screen opening size] and corn cobs. Bulk density of compacted materials ranged from 224 to 272 kg/m3 (14 to 17 lb/ft3). The maximum throughput of roll press was 2.6 t/h (2.9 ton/h) for corn cobs. Specific energy consumption (including no-load machine energy) for the roll press compaction ranged from 33 to 168 MJ/t.
