DATA IN ACTION:IMPLEMENTING DATA-BASED INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Chapter

Abstract

Data-based instruction (DBI) is an approach that guides the intensification and individualization of academic intervention. Despite the established value of DBI as an evidence-based practice, its routine use is limited, thus reducing its large-scale impact on student outcomes. Educators often struggle with the essential element of DBI-making instructional decisions based on data. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of DBI implementation to support students with intensive learning needs. We define DBI and describe the historical context within which this practice emerged, including the development of curriculum-based measurement as an assessment alternative with the explicit purpose of informing instructional decision-making. Next, we summarize the five broad steps in the DBI process and how each step is implemented as part of school-based intervention delivery. Finally, future directions for research and practice are included. We identify key issues for scholarly inquiry and targeted innovations with the potential to improve DBI implementation.
