Cutaneous barrier function is an essential for healthy skin. Intact barrier function keeps skin hydrated, prevents fissures and protects skin from infection. Disruption of barrier function and skin dehydration can be seen as a result of environmental insults like ultraviolet light, cold and low humidity and overly aggressive cleansing. Compromised barrier function is also seen in diseases like rosacea, acne and atopic dermatitis. In this chapter we will review the physiology of the stratum corneum and its role in maintaining barrier function. Moisturizing basics including common ingredients and formulation considerations will also be discussed.
