Abstract
The literature of criollismo, dating approximately to the first half of the twentieth century, articulated an autochthonous Latin American identity based in traditional rural cultures. Its principal focus on the portrayal of popular customs and local landscapes sought to cement a homogeneous self-image among populations rapidly transformed by processes of modernization and urbanization, and to promote regional autonomy from North American and European cultural influences.
