Abstract
At 10.160-1, Pollux cites Herodotus, Archilochus and three 5th-century comic poets to explain the meaning of and the group. I examine Pollux' treatment of these words in an attempt to make better sense of them than the standard modern lexica do, while also demonstrating the fragility of our understanding of in Cratinus fr. 74 in particular.1
