Abstract
The authors consider the problem of controlling a thermoviscoelastic system. They assume that the elastic bar is composed of a Boltzmann material (i.e., it exhibits a fading memory behavior) and include the simplest thermodynamic model to investigate the effect of heat transfer on damping. A quadratic cost optimal control problem is formulated, and a finite-element/averaging scheme is used to solve the problem with and without thermal effects.
