Abstract

Condylomata acuminata are anogenital warts which occur as a result of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. These viruses have been classified in the family Papoviridae, within which both human and animal types are recognized. A decade ago condylomata acuminata were thought to be trivial lesions of little importance to clinician and patient alike; today they are recognized as one of the most important of the sexually transmitted diseases. This modification in viewpoint has occurred because of a great increase in prevalence and because of the newly recognized relationship between HPV infection and the development of genital malignancy. The material presented here extends that available in previously published reviews.
