Abstract
The growth of expert system knowledge bases will eventually require DBMS support. Providing such support will require data modeling tools that match the needs of these systems. The authors applied a data modeling tool, Logical Data Structures, to an existing rule-based expert system called Galen to assess the power of the tool and its fitness for this new area of application. They found that it was not beyond them or the notation to produce a clear logical schema that was understandable by both the producers and other audiences.
