Abstract

Liquid surfactant membranes containing tridodecylamine can concentrate chromium against its gradient to achieve better than 90% removal in 4 min. The chromium flux can be explained with a mobile carrier mechanism in which two amines combine with a proton and a hydrogen dichromate. The results provide both a chemically well-defined analogue of cotransport and a guide for developing more selective liquid membrane separations.
