Abstract

Although a large number of control strategies have been proposed for computerized traffic signal control, their effectiveness is still limited by the complexity and the size of real life networks. The problem of optimal control of critical intersections is discussed and three different formulations and solutions are presented. The alternative formulations are resulting from improved modeling of the traffic dynamics at the intersection. It is demonstrated that as the traffic models become more realistic the control problem is simplified. A new traffic model presented here is currently being extended for a system of intersections and it is expected that it will allow determination of an efficient control strategy for large scale networks.
