Abstract

A numerical model for the simulation of laser energy deposition in air was developed in earlier work. In this paper, the model is compared with experimental measurements of the laser-induced plasma in the nanosecond regime. The agreement between the experiments and simulations varies with different configurations of the laser beam. Energy deposition in supersonic flow past spheres was studied for increasing Mach number. The reduction in surface pressure on the sphere did not vary significantly with varying Mach number. The effect of laser energy deposition in three-dimensional supersonic flows with Mach reflection of the crossing shocks was studied. The energy deposition was found to cause a complete transition to steady regular reflection in one case, while there was a temporary decrease in the height of the Mach stem at a higher Mach number.
