Abstract
The advanced technology attachment drives which are beginning to grow beyond the desktop market into the workstation and server markets are analyzed. The development of RAID controllers for commodity disks has made it possible in building modest-sized storage units with commodity disks. It is suggested that the total cost of ownership to maintain the storage should also be considered while making a design decision for storage. The new advances in file systems and RAID controllers for low-cost storage devices enabled a commoditization of high-performance, high-volume storage.
