Abstract

What is business and human rights (BHR)? How have debates about BHR evolved in practice and in academia? How can businesses implement their human rights obligations? What are the respective roles and responsibilities of states, businesses, and other organizations in relation to human rights? How does BHR differ from other concepts of business responsibility, such as corporate social responsibility or stakeholder management? This introductory chapter provides an overview of BHR by offering a typology as to how the field might be understood – BHR as obligation, governance, movement, management tool, and relationship.
