Abstract

Although surgery used to be the last choice of treatment for patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP), it is now being considered earlier in the disease process and may occasionally be indicated prior to endoscopic interventions. CP affects 25-98/100 000 people, with an incidence of approximately 5/100 000 per year (1). By far the most common symptom is pain (2). Other complications include pancreatic fluid collections, exocrine (steatorrhea, weight loss) and endocrine insufficiency (diabetes). This chapter will outline the primary aetiologies of CP, treatment, indications for surgery, and describe the operative choices based on pancreatic morphology.
