Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to identify and categorize AMT A Competency Categories from published research in the lournal of Music Therapy from 1964-2008 involving music therapy students. The authors identified and examined 18 research articles that met criteria. Data from each article were placed into the following categories: Author(s); Year; N; Design; Independent Variable; Dependent Variable; AMTA Competency Category; Results; and Statistics. Results from the analyses of 18 studies indicated most studies concerned music therapy competencies, followed by clinical foundations, and music foundations. Additionally, researchers utilized large sample sizes and diverse designs in their studies. Implications for the academic and clinical training of music therapists are provided along with suggestions for future research.
