Abstract
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health issue that affects millions worldwide. Despite its high global prevalence, IPV is underreported and underrecognized. Survivors often endure physical injuries with significant health consequences. Females sustain more severe injuries from IPV and are at increased risk of homicide by an intimate partner. Healthcare providers routinely encounter this patient population and can save lives with appropriate screening, management, and referral. Continuous, supportive care and provision of community and national resources improve patient outcomes. Patient safety can be prioritized by healthcare systems through the establishment of educational campaigns and IPV screening and management protocols. Creating a safe confidential environment for disclosure, keeping screening conversational, and appropriately responding to positive screening with warm referral to ancillary services are paramount in the care of IPV survivors. This case study reports a patient encounter involving an orbital fracture that resulted from intimate partner violence.
