Calorimetric studies near the smectic-A1smectic-A phase transition of a liquid-crystal compound

Abstract

High-resolution calorimetric studies have been carried out near the smectic-A1smectic-A phase transition of 4-heptylpheny-4-(4-nitrobenzoyloxy) benzoate (DB7NO2). The transition was found to be nearly second order with about 10 mK thermal hysteresis. The data with | T-Tc |>30 mK can be fitted with a power-law divergence with critical exponents ==0.370.02 and a ratio of critical amplitudes AA=0.260.03. Here Tc is the transition temperature.
