Abstract

Burns result from exposure to heat, caustic chemicals, electricity, or radiation. Damage to the natural barrier provided by skin results in rapid fluid losses and risk of infection. Permanent scarring is a common long-term complication. Burns may also be complicated by sensory deficits due to loss of nerve connections and limb loss due to circulatory compromise.
