Abstract

Bronchoscopy is the detailed examination of the trachea and bronchi with a specialized rigid or flexible endoscope. Both modalities offer their respective advantages and disadvantages. Flexible bronchoscopy is often used for diagnostic purposes and interventional techniques continue to evolve. Rigid bronchoscopy remains an integral tool for perioperative laryngeal and tracheal assessment and should be available for foreign body removal. The decision to perform a rigid or flexible bronchoscope is case and surgeon-dependent. A skilled airway endoscopist is well versed in both techniques.
