Abstract
This chapter presents the traditional categories of overview, etiology/pathophysiology, signalment/history, clinical features, key differential diagnosis, diagnostics, and therapeutics of blister beetles toxicosis in equine. Blister beetles are flower-feeding insects that contain cantharidin, a toxic vesicant agent that blisters tissue on contact. Goals of therapy are to halt toxin ingestion, decontaminate the gut, hasten toxin elimination, control abdominal pain, correct hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia, and maintain hydration, blood pressure, and tissue perfusion. The chapter is an indispensable reference for veterinary clinicians and students dealing with equine medicine, as well as for anyone seeking concise and comprehensive information about equine toxicology.
